According to Dr. Oz Garcinia Cambogia is:

“Revolutionary new research says it could be the magic ingredient that lets you lose weight without diet and exercise”  - Dr.Oz

But should we believe all the hype? Sorry, not to rain on the parade, but I’m a skeptic (and so is the research).

Based on The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database

GARCINIA

What is it?
Garcinia is a plant. The fruit rind is used to make medicine. Don’t confuse garcinia with Garcinia hanburyi (gamboge resin).
Is it Effective?
Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database rates effectiveness based on scientific evidence according to the following scale: Effective, Likely Effective, Possibly Effective, Possibly Ineffective, Likely Ineffective, Ineffective, and Insufficient Evidence to Rate. The effectiveness ratings for GARCINIA are as follows:

Possibly Ineffective for…

  • Weight loss. Taking garcinia fruit rind extract doesn’t seem to decrease weight, fat breakdown, or energy expenditure in overweight people. There is some mixed evidence that garcinia might help people feel full even when eating less, but it’s too early to recommend garcinia for this use.
Insufficient Evidence to Rate Effectiveness for…

  • Treating worms and parasites.
  • Emptying the bowel.
  • Severe diarrhea (dysentery).
  • Other conditions.

More evidence is needed to rate the effectiveness of garcinia for these uses.

How does it work?
Developing research suggests that garcinia might prevent fat storage and control appetite; however, whether these effects occur in humans is unclear.Mechanism of Action: The applicable parts of garcinia are the fruit and rind. Garcinia fruit rind extract, reported to contain 50% hydroxycitric acid (HCA), is theorized to interfere with lipogenesis. The active ingredient HCA is believed to be a competitive inhibitor of ATP-citrate-lyase, the enzyme responsible for converting citrate into acetyl-coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA). This conversion into acetyl-CoA occurs when the energy consumed exceeds the energy requirements of the body. Other researchers think that garcinia inhibits the supply of fatty acids without affecting adipose conversion. Preliminary research suggests that garcinia inhibits the accumulation of lipid droplets in fat cells and thereby reduces lipid levels and decreases lipid accumulation in the liver (8571). The HCA found in garcinia is also theorized to improve exercise endurance by increasing lipid oxidation and decreasing carbohydrate utilization. Some animal research suggests that HCA might suppress appetite.
Are there safety concerns?
Garcinia is POSSIBLY SAFE for most people when used for 12 weeks or less. Long-term safety is unknown. Garcinia can cause nausea, digestive tract discomfort, and headache.

Special Precautions & Warnings:
