But should we believe all the hype? Sorry, not to rain on the parade, but I’m a skeptic (and so is the research).
- Journal of Obesity: The evidence from RCTs suggests that Garcinia extracts/HCA generate weight loss on the short term. However, the magnitude of this effect is small, is no longer statistically significant when only rigorous RCTs are considered, and its clinical relevance seems questionable. Future trials should be more rigorous, longer in duration, and better reported.
- An overview of the safety and efficacy of a novel, natural hydroxycitric acid extract (HCA-SX) for weight management: At the end of 8 weeks, body weight and BMI decreased by 5.4% and 5.2%, respectively. Study include 30 minute walking program and only 60 volunteers.
- Garcinia cambogia as a potential antiobesity agent: a randomized controlled trial: Garcinia cambogia failed to produce significant weight loss and fat mass loss beyond that observed with placebo
- Evaluation of the safety and efficacy of hydroxycitric acid or Garcinia cambogia extracts in humans: at the doses usually administered, no differences have been reported in terms of side effects or adverse events (those studied) in humans between individuals treated with G. cambogia and controls.
- NIH Report: Although studies supporting its use have been published, no information supporting the safety of this product was identified in the available literature.

|How does it work?|
|Developing research suggests that garcinia might prevent fat storage and control appetite; however, whether these effects occur in humans is unclear.Mechanism of Action: The applicable parts of garcinia are the fruit and rind. Garcinia fruit rind extract, reported to contain 50% hydroxycitric acid (HCA), is theorized to interfere with lipogenesis. The active ingredient HCA is believed to be a competitive inhibitor of ATP-citrate-lyase, the enzyme responsible for converting citrate into acetyl-coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA). This conversion into acetyl-CoA occurs when the energy consumed exceeds the energy requirements of the body. Other researchers think that garcinia inhibits the supply of fatty acids without affecting adipose conversion. Preliminary research suggests that garcinia inhibits the accumulation of lipid droplets in fat cells and thereby reduces lipid levels and decreases lipid accumulation in the liver (8571). The HCA found in garcinia is also theorized to improve exercise endurance by increasing lipid oxidation and decreasing carbohydrate utilization. Some animal research suggests that HCA might suppress appetite.|
