Back in August 2011 Tim made his official pre-release announcement for the 4 Hour Chef.

Like many, I promptly grabbed the early buyers discount and purchased my copy with Amazon.com.

A couple of things then transpired. First, Tim claimed an impressive spot as one of the first “big time” authors to publish on Amazon.com. This created a tremendous amount of media buzz. Second, Tim used this buzz to ride a subsequent wave of book sales for his wildly popular second book: The 4 Hour Body.

Several months later Tim announced that the release of The 4 Hour Chef would be wait-listed for another 9 months… Slated for release in November 2012.

I am currently reading the book recommended by Tim Ferriss himself on his blog: Trust me I’m Lying Confessions of a Media Manipulator by Ryan Holiday.

It is a GREAT BOOK, one that every blogger should read. I especially love this statement:

“I’ve never been desperate enough to need to work inside the system as a lowly (un-) paid blogger” –Ryan Holiday

Oh, the wound… Sad but unfortunately quite true.

It goes without saying that Tim is a media manipulator and this is why I follow him. It is an art. We love to be manipulated!

The art is in the delivery… Tim solves problems in his books, he debunks truisms, and he does it with style. His info is timely, quite good and despite his obvious wealth I sense a compassionate voice.

Prior to the release of The 4 Hour Workweek Tim Ferriss was virtually unknown, and now as a blogger myself who tries to detail my experience using Tim’s techniques this blog often generates 40,000 – 50,000 unique page views per month. Who would have thought?

If you’re an author who wants to sell books it would pay to learn a thing or two from Tim Ferriss.

Let’s look quickly at some key elements of his last book release: The 4 Hour Body:

For the author of the 4 Hour Workweek Tim Ferris works harder than any other modern author I can think of!

I have wondered if Tim prior to announcing the release of The 4 Hour Chef even had the book close to finished?

Or maybe it was finished and in lieu of his continued success of the 4 Hour Body he felt publishing the 4 Hour Chef too early would be a mistake that would detract from his bottom line?

Or maybe it was to get a better sense of what people want, create an early media stir and spend a little more time working on a book cover… Tough competition after having seen my truly pathetic attempt on the cover of the LA Times Blog section.

(I thought this was funny especially since The Muppet’s Chef is juggling fruit… forbidden on the slow carb diet!)

Either way, I was surprised at the discrete notice of the books delay, the subtle message I received from Amazon.com announcing it’s postponement and the fact that nobody protested the change in the release date.

Tim’s association with masters of manipulation like Ryan Holiday shouldn’t be alarming. I find it comforting.

It is just further proof that if you want to know how to make money selling books, build a multi-million dollar publishing platform, create a minimalist business, have fun, sell drugs for money, get buffed and give endless 15 minute orgasms… You need to hang with Tim.

As a lowly blogger I guess I need to get off my ass and read a bit more of the 4 Hour Workweek. Although maybe this blog is essentially a play on itself.

The fact that a blog about Tim Ferriss, the master of the “Niche Market” is actually itself a “Niche Market” is ironic, but true. Look how many people have spun successful businesses off the 4 Hour Body…You Down with PAGG? Isn’t that a song?

As a health care provider my intent with this blog is to fill in the cracks where Tim could not in the 4 Hour Body, build better tools for my patients through the use of Tim’s “mindful minimalism”, delve into these tools to better my life and hopefully yours, and someday “shorten” my workweek in hopes of doing some good in the world. The goal is never to manipulate and deceive.

Was this deliberate?
