Thirty Seven.

You see this Dr. is not like most. She was born in Afghanistan and escaped to Pakistan during the Taliban invasion when she was only nine. Through a series of mind-boggling events she and her family arrived in the United States where she would later study at the University of Florida and receive her medical degree in internal medicine.

Upon finishing medical school and completing her residency, instead of landing the “perfect” hospital job and buying her immigrant parents their 4 bedroom American dream home in the burbs, she took her medical degree and set out to change the world. She travelled for several years doing medical work, the kind nobody else want to do, the kind that usually doesn’t make it to the collection plate at your local church.

And here we find ourselves side by side in a small rural community clinic in central California where she travels once every other week from New Orleans to work a 7-13 day shift, later to return home for a week and then start the process again.

Retire in 5 years?

Retire from the rat race, build income through hard focused work over 5 years, to live a dream. “Retire” to build clinics and provide healthcare to the women of Afghanistan, return to a war-torn impoverished country with the knowledge accumulated not just through school but through life: To effect GREAT change. The New Rich!

What captured my attention most was something she said:

“My ability to live boldly comes from being born where I was and having the opportunities that I have had. It was by overcoming great fear and obstacles as a young person that has made making changes now in my life much easier.”

“This gives me an advantage over most people”

“People who will live their lives spent in a fog of fear and impossibilities”.

This from a women born to a world of poverty and intolerance without a dollar in her pocket!

What then is holding you back?

_______________________________________

I diagnosed my 3rd patient in the last 3 months with terminal cancer this week. I saw her today, held her hand, and looked into her eyes.

This was easier than the last I thought he was only 34, three dependent children and a wife, lost to a tiny little black spot on his skin that no one ever saw coming.

We are limited so much by our fear.

What I am realizing after talking to this doctor is that the more comfort you have to “loose” the harder it is to “let go”. Let go of what? As Tim Ferriss says in the Four Hour Work Week: “Your tolerable and comfortable existence doing something unfulfilling”.

In the eyes of the terminally ill you learn a very important point. Fear is limited to those of us fated to leave this world with our greatest gifts still inside.

In essence: A fear of death is nothing more than an even greater fear of life!

Take the time today to ask somebody about their lives, you may be surprised. The New Rich do not flaunt their “wealth” because the richness that they have is not measurable. It is simply an awareness of the true meaning of time, and the value of a minute!
